What to Wear this Weekend: Sweater Dresses and Boots

Sweater Dress and Boots Collage

With most of the country experiencing colder than usual temperatures, it can be difficult to figure out something cute to wear. While staying home all weekend in a onesie would be ideal, many of us will need to leave the house for errands, meetings, and most importantly…brunch. Luckily I got your back! As someone who is perpetually colder than most people (I basically keep the heater on year round) I’ve come up with endless ways to stay warm without sacrificing style. My holy grail combo?…Sweater dresses and boots. This weekend, if you have to bare the cold, try pairing a thick sweater dress over sturdy tights and over the knee boots.

August Getty AW15 Fashion Show Recap

Emerging from his debut as the youngest designer to ever show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion week last season, women’s luxury ready-to-wear fashion designer August Getty is starting to gain familiarity with the runway as he showed his second collection at Lincoln Center on Friday. Reigning from Los Angeles, August Getty’s collection fit right into the New York fashion scene. Leather on leather on lace was defiantly the trend of the collection. Beautifully intricate laser cut leather and lace ensembles in sophisticated yet youthful silhouettes, brought true opulence to the fall season. Ebony black and small hits of fudge were the top color contenders of the collection. What made Getty’s collection so remarkable was his choice of technologically treated fabrications. The laminated lace fabric in Getty’s collection appeared like soft liquid silk on the model’s skin. Laser cut leather was another highlight as well as the small hints of velvet silk, prints and patchwork details.
Artisan craftsmanship courtesy of Getty’s atelier did not go unnoticed on the runway. The impeccable construction and drape of the leather ensembles showcased hints of couture technique and an eye for detail. Leather bell sleeved coats and crop tops were perfectly constructed, and the lace mastered a balance of both drape and structure on the moving body. Getty’s collection showed hints of 70’s vibes with bell sleeves, and a range of mini, mindi, and full length skirts and dresses. Getty also brought the collection back to the youthful clientele by pairing high-wasted shorts with long sleeved crop tops. More fall silhouette additions were leather and lace coats that could be interchangeably paired with the rest of the collection.
August Getty’s second fashion week collection showed true poise for such a young talent. Getty’s balance of youthful maturity has quickly captivated the fashion world and it will continue to do so. At the end of his inspiring show, the humble designer took a selfie of his name on the shows back drop, bringing laughs and a sense of light heartedness to the fashion crowd.

Between the holiday season nuptials and Valentine’s day around the corner, it seems that social media starts to buzz with wedding news every February. Last year we shared the top bridal trends for 2014 and this year we’re sharing even more!

To get the skinny on wedding season early, we decided to ask the experts. We interviewed Sathya and Heather, the bridal geniuses behind the wedding suite site Lakum to find out their favorite upcoming trends. Keep reading to see their favorite bridal trends for 2015.

1. Black and White: We love the pairing of black and white in bridal. For the daring bride, try pairing a gorgeous black and white gown with a stark white bouquet for contrast.

Tea Length Bride2. Tea Length Gowns: This year it’s all about tea length gowns. In the past long flowing gowns were the rule but now bride’s are turning to beautiful ankle baring looks. We love this look because it allows the bride to show off her excellent taste in shoes. Get the look by pairing a simple gown with a strong sexy designer pump.

3. Pops of color: This trend can be in the form of a fun print, trim, or even accessory.

4. Natural Beauty: Unlike years past, this year brides want to showcase their natural beauty. Get the look by opting for neutral tone makeup with a focus on healthy lush skin. Finish off the look with slightly messy, beautiful hair that isn’t overdone. Don’t be afraid to even wear your hair down, not all brides are designed for the updo!)

5. A Suite of Looks: A collection of looks in complimentary styles that make her the star of her own weekend. We love the idea of this because there’s nothing like having a change of looks during your special occasion!

How to Wear Dresses in the Winter

Dresses in winter Collage

For those of us who love to wear dresses it’s difficult to say good-bye for the whole winter. Luckily we don’t have to! I get asked all the time about this particular subject and over the years I’ve come up with a few tried and true tips! Keep reading to see my five tips on how to wear dresses in the winter.

1. Top or Bottom: As a rule of thumb when wearing dresses in the winter months, it’s best to find a dress with either long sleeves or a longer hemlines. By covering either your top or bottom, your dresses won’t look out-of-place in the chilly weather.

2. Layer Over. Layering doesn’t have to be boring. Get creative and try putting a sweater on top of your dress to get the look of a skirt and blouse. Not only will you be warmer but you’ll also get more “looks” out of your clothes. You can also try pairing your dress with a cute statement coat.

3. Layer Under: Tights are a must for wearing dresses in the winter. Don’t even attempt to wear a dress without them once the weather gets chilly.

4. Head and Shoulders: Increase your style while increasing your warmth by wearing a cute hat or scarf. This year wide brim hats and fur scarfs are a great touch to any outfit.

5. Knees to Toes: Knee length boots or socks go great on top of tights for extra warmth and style. Not only will you get the benefit of warm legs, but you’ll also be on trend.

And there you have it, five ways to keep wearing your dresses long after the Fall is gone!

Comment below and let us know if you wear dresses in the winter, what are your favorite ways to wear them?

How to Wear Over the Knee Boots

How to Wear over the knee boots at night

Over the Knee boots (or OTK boots for short) have been on trend for a few seasons now. This year the trend is bigger than ever (well since Julia Roberts wore them back in the 90’s) and easier to wear than you think! Check out these tips for how to wear this trend day or night.

How to Wear Over the Knee Boots Collage 4

Day time: OTK boots are a girl’s best friend in the winter and fall. These boots go great with oversized sweaters and jeans for a cute comfy look. Pair these boots with a loose sweater dress or leggings for a slightly more polished daytime outfit.

Night time: Yes, it is possible to wear over the knee boots at night without looking like a lady of the night. To pull this look off try pairing it with less form fitting silhouettes. A skater dress or skirt can look great with over the knee boots as long as the hem is shorter than the boots. OTK boots can also be paired with leggings and a chic blouse for a sultry evening look.

The key to wearing OTK boots is all in the proportions. Whether you’re wearing these boots for day, evening, or both — remember to wear something looser on top.

3 Coat Trends to Wear this Winter

Winter Coat Trends 2015 Collage
Wearing a coat can often feel like a (much) necessary evil. All winter long you’re stuck covering up your cute outfits and lugging around an extra heavy layer. Many of us end up buying the default black coat because it “goes with anything”. This year, instead of fading into the sea of black pea coats, why not try standing out with a chic coat in a daring color?
This season blush, leopard, and crimson color coats are all on trend. While they may seem like bold statement coats, they all actually function as neutrals.

Pantone Reveals Color of the Year for 2015: Marsala

Pantone, an X-Rite company and the global color authority, announced PANTONE® 18-1438 Marsala, a naturally robust and earthy wine red, as the Color of the Year for 2015.

“While PANTONE 18-3224 Radiant Orchid, the captivating 2014 color of the year, encouraged creativity and innovation, Marsala enriches our mind, body and soul, exuding confidence and stability,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®.

“Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.”

Marsala for Fashion
Marsala was a hit on the Spring 2015 runways with fashion designers; Daniel Silverstain, Hervé Léger by Max Azria and Dennis Basso incorporated the hue into their collections. The impactful, full-bodied qualities of Marsala make for an elegant statement color when the color is used on its own or as a compelling accent when paired with many other colors.
With the ever-growing popularity of floral prints and striping, variations of this hue will undoubtedly carry into men’s and women’s clothing throughout next year. Marsala is also a popular choice for jewelry and fashion accessories, including handbags, hats, footwear and the burgeoning market of wearable technology.
This highly varietal shade combines dramatically with neutrals, including warmer taupes and grays. Because of its burnished undertones, sultry Marsala is highly compatible with amber, umber and golden yellows, greens in both turquoise and teal, and blues in the more vibrant range.

Marsala for Beauty
An incredibly versatile color for beauty, Marsala is an appealing and sophisticated shade that’s flattering against many skin tones.

Marsala pairs exquisitely with monochromatic mixes of peachy pinks, and sparkles against antiqued gold metallics, offering an assortment of lipstick and blush options. Marsala illuminates a range of smoky-neutral color combinations, making it a captivating eye shadow color that can be worn from morning until night. Add an overlay of bronze for a dramatic look that suits any eye color, or use Marsala as a go-to finishing touch on nails.
