Trend To Try: Rihanna’s Sleek Red Carpet Ponytail

Rihanna's Red Carpet Hair

Motions Celebrity Stylist Ursula Stephen created a simple sleek look for Rihanna this past Sunday as she graced the Red Carpet. Ursula was inspired to create a look that was clean and simple to accompany Rihanna’s sleek suit. Steal Rihanna’s style with these step by step instructions from celebrity Stylist Ursula herself.

How to:

  1. Start with clean, air dried hair
  2. Flat iron medium sections of hair from root to half-way down the hair shaft, focusing on the edges. Wrap a small piece of hair around the base of the ponytail to disguise the elastic
  3. Gather hair into a pony tail and secure with an elastic band. Tame flyaways with a light hold spritz and a brush
  4. Finish with Motions Light Hold Working Spritz for hold and Motions Indulgent Oil Spray for shine

Hair Trend: The “Micro” Bang

IMG_0396.PNG

Micro bang: a shorter than normal bang/fringe.

The ‘micro bang’ is a bold statement cut that has been seen on celebrities such as Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. The right amount of texture is key to pull them off,” explains George Gonzalez, owner of George the salon Chicago. “There are a few elements to consider before you take the plunge. If your hairline is dense, a bang like this can look fantastic. With a choppy, short fringe, you also can’t ignore natural cowlicks. If a client has too many, they should consider the amount of work they will need to do daily to smooth them out. Plus, do you feel comfortable accentuating features like your forehead and eyebrows?”

If you think you’re cut for this trend, keep reading to see some do’s and don’ts.

Do: Bring pictures just in case you cannot find what you want in the salon magazines.

Don’t: Go too short. It is best to start gradually cutting. Your stylist can always take more off.

Do: Sit and discuss your hair before you get sent back to get shampooed. Make sure your stylist connects with you and understands your needs. Don’t be afraid to say “no” that’s not what I mean. It is a stylist’s responsibility to understand your language and what you are describing when it comes to your hair, especially for a drastic cut like this.

Personally, this trend isn’t up my alley but I think it can look good on people if done right.

Breaking new ground in Hollywood-inspired fashion, this is the first-ever design collaboration between a national retailer, a top-rated network TV show, its costume designer and leading lady. It is also the first design collaboration for Washington and Paolo, the duo credited for creating powerful looks for Scandal’s protagonist, Olivia Pope, and for inspiring millions of fans to call themselves “Gladiators in Suits.”

Style Steal: Carrie Diaries’ Larissa aka Freema Agyeman

Freema Agyeman style from Carrie Diaries Collage

Of all the shows that slide across my TV during prime time hours, The Carrie Diaries is one that I’ve loved from the start despite having only mediocre reviews and following it’s first year. Although I was late to jump on the SITC bandwagon, the minute I started writing and ended up moving to New York City, I had no choice but to become a fan. Carrie’s life (though far more glamorous than mine) seems to knowingly touch on situations that me (and most of my friends) have all dealt with at sometime or another. And the Carrie Diaries definitely seem to be following in the same four inch Manolos well. And of the “Manolo walkers” on the show, “Larissa” played by Freema Agyeman is one of the most stylish of them all. Freema’s character screams 80’s from head to heel. I love her use of color, prints, and bold lips. To make her look real life wareable, check out the pieces we picked below!

Three Ways to Wear a Skater Skirt

The skater skirt has taken the UK high street by storm, and despite its first appearance a couple of years ago now, it’s still as popular as ever. Wear with cropped tees, jumpers, blouse’s, t-shirts, bralets, you name it! I’ve styled the same skirt three different ways to encourage you to get the most out of this staple piece.

Smart Casual

To smarten this grey marl skater skirt up, tuck in a blouse and layer over a jumper, providing a pop of colour as well as warmth. A little collar poking out is one of my favourite looks at the moment, and paired with Converse or boots, this makes for a perfect every day outfit.

Dinner

Draw attention to your favourite blouse by pairing it with a plain coloured skirt and clutch for a dinner or summer party. The femininity of the skirt flatters your shape and doesn’t draw the eye from your shirt on top. Slip on some pretty pumps and you’re ready to go!

Team your skirt with a neon crop; another of this seasons trends, for a night out with the girls. Add a statement necklace and some heels and you’re all set to party the night away!

Comment below and let us know how you style your skater style skirt!?

What’s Trending Now: Cropped Turtlenecks {Look for Less Edition}

What"s Trending Now: Look for Less Edition

Save Item: ASOS $14 / Splurge Item: American Apparel $30

Sleeveless turtlenecks in the 90’s were like the shoulder pads of the 80’s, everyone was doing it and no one was quite sure why. Are you trying to keep from catching a cold or are you trying to hide a hickey from your parents a la Full House? What ever the case apparently the 90’s are back… and I’m loving it! All jokes aside I love this trend and can’t wait till mine arrives in the mail. I bought a regular plain old sheer turtle neck from Express last year to wear to work in the winter and to my surprise, I ended up wearing it more than I anticipated. Since the summer I’ve been on the hunt for a cropped sleeveless variety but couldn’t find one anywhere until I finally tracked one down at American Apparel. I liked the look of it but not the price so I held off on buying it. Naturally, I was super pumped when I stumbled upon this one at ASOS yesterday during their Cyber Monday Sale, for less than half the price of the American Apparel one.

Need more convincing? Still not sure about this trend? Check out some of these stylish celebs rocking the trend!
